Ray Andersen & The First Verse

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
"Bringing what I call singer/songwriter rock back to one of my favorite places, I come well-armed with the musical talents of Paul Geiger, Mike Doktorski, Rob Meehan & Dave Hartkern.

The first set of this night's music will include some of my originals... songs of introspection...and experiencing life in the center part of a lifetime (gulp), as well as a 'darker dose' of cover songs from the 60s-90s.

Second set will be more 'up-beat', yet not-overplayed, well-chosen songs to dance to in the second set, and some songs I used to sing in Cats On A Smooth Surface. I'll also share some anecdotes about performing onstage with Chuck Berry & Meat Loaf.

A guest singer/musician or two will also grace the stage...Thank you!"

"To Sir With Love" An Exclusive Evening with LULU

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
"The first time I heard her sing, I knew we were born in the same pond." James Brown

Perhaps best known for her iconic recording of "TO SIR WITH LOVE", LULU has been internationally famous for 50 years. Yet she seems utterly undimmed by time, slim, vivacious and energetic, with an appealing combination of bright eyed sprightliness and a very adult, no-nonsense directness. "I was thrown into this business in my childhood. It's a minefield, you see so many people harmed by believing in their success. You think you're invincible, then crash, it all comes down. I've managed to look like I'm holding it together but it ain't been easy. This is what I'm talking about, everything that I've been through in my life. It's really about going beyond the problems everyone's got. I've been there, done it but now I'm living in the solution. That's what it's about!"

LULU started young, a 15-year-old Scottish soul sensation. Born into the tough world of Glasgow's working class tenements in 1948, she was raised plain Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie. She has been such a fixture of the British entertainment landscape for so long now, she is not particularly defined by her musicality. She has sung at the Eurovision, hosted a Saturday night light entertainment TV show, acted in films, theatre and television. "In the beginning it was never about being famous. I wanted to sing, whether I got paid for it or not. Then all of a sudden I had a hit record. Bam! Boom! You don't know what's happening, it's euphoric and terrifying at the same time, and you kind of get caught up in it."

She has been twice married (the first time, aged 19, to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees) and twice divorced, enjoyed an infamous encounter with Jimi Hendrix in the Sixties and secret romantic liaison with David Bowie in the Seventies. "I've been through a lot in my life, a lot of struggles. I've been one of the luckiest people but I've also been thrown from pillar to post, emotionally."

It is probably fair to say she hasn't always made the music she wanted to make. But along the way there have been classics, the 1964 Isley Brothers cover Shout, the 1967 number one To Sir With Love and The Boat That I Row which were both performed on the Ed Sullivan show, Morning Dew (made famous by the Grateful Dead) and Best of Both Worlds (both 1968), the 1969 soul stormer Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby) and Boom Bang-a-Bang, 1974's Bond theme The Man With The Golden Gun, the Bowie collaboration The Man Who Sold The World, 1981's "Top 20" hit I Could Never Miss You More Than I Do and even her 1993 smash with the huge British pop band Take That on Dan Hartman's Relight My Fire. Her most recent, self-written album "Making Life Rhyme" (Decca) stands head and shoulders with Lulu's very best and most loved work.

Britain's first great female rock and soul voice performed a successful nation-wide tour in 2015, which culminated with a summer packed with festival appearances including the infamous Glastonbury. In 2016, she went back on the road with 35 date sell out UK tour, stretching from Aberdeen to Torquay, doing what she loves best. Such was the success of this that a 40 date tour has been booked for 2017.

JAMES MADDOCK & BAND

with very special guest: JEFFREY GAINES

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
***James Maddock, the songwriter's songwriter, who has earned the respect of masterful writers such as Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nile, has built his acclaimed legacy on humbly honoring purity of expression. Many albums in his catalog are elegantly spare, conveying his songs and sentiments in the most direct possible way. But for his latest, The Green, the songs guided him into recording the most eclectic, exhilaratingly soulful, and imaginatively produced album in his career. "This is my best album. It's an upbeat record with really strong songs and a lot of surprises," the British transplant reveals. "It all happened really naturally. I just listened to where the songs where going and allowed myself the time to give each one a proper sonic home." The Green truly captures NPR's accolade that "his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy."

Since 1999, James Maddock's boldly vulnerable songwriting, honeyed rasp, and distinct folk and Americana aesthetic have garnered acclaim from icons, peers, and tastemaking outlets like NPR, American Songwriter, Relix Magazine, and CMT Edge as well as having performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). He's built a respected international profile through tireless touring. Relix notes: "James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in, craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately, he doesn't need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery."

In England, James was the frontman for the Columbia Records band Wood where he was introduced to a mainstream audience when songs from the group's debut, Songs From Stamford Hill, were prominently featured in the TV hit Dawson's Creek. In 2003, Maddock moved to NYC, and launched his solo career. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for "Best Americana Album," while its follow-up, Wake Up And Dream, ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's (NYC) Listener Poll. This summer Maddock and his great band will be performing entries from The Green, as well as fan faves and catalogue nuggets. Live, Maddock imaginatively reinterprets his oeuvre to keep it fresh for him and his audience. "I love how songs reveal themselves differently in the live setting," James says. "I'm grateful I have such a large body of work and an audience to share a creative dialogue with. I feel very lucky."

***With only his voice and a guitar for accompaniment, Harrisburg, PA native Jeffrey Gaines has earned a reputation as a captivating performer, heralded for his soul-searching lyrics and his powerful live performances. The self titled Jeffrey Gaines, the first of his five studio releases garnered four stars from The Philadelphia Inquirer, describing Gaines as "...an ethereal soul...insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge." Somewhat Slightly Dazed, and Galore followed. Interview Magazine called Gaines' music "soul-searching" and "refreshingly free of jargon, sentiment or cliche." He later released Always Be to both critical and commercial praise. Featuring his emotional interpretation of "In Your Eyes" and his own soaringly beautiful "Always Be," the album hit #45 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. The New York Post proclaimed Always Be as "a dozen-song mix...that completely illustrates the depth he is capable of." Gaines' impressive catalogue grew with Toward The Sun, produced by Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and Crowded House). The Boston Globe declared that "Gaines' soulful, wounded vocals make a case for his being one of pop's finest singers...an artist who deserves far more attention than some of his more hyped, yet less talented peers." Mojo noted, "This established soul-folkie's sexy growl has an underlying edge, making it a memorable album. Heartfelt and unpretentious."
